  Gene Translation Laboratory
Genetic translation is the process of protein synthesis based on the information coded in genes.

The Gene Translation Laboratory at the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park) studies this process in human pathogens. Specifically, we work on the mechanisms of protein synthesis of the organisms that cause malaria (Plasmodium falciparum), Chagas disease (Trypanosoma cruzi), and infantile pneumococcal meningitis (Streptococcus pneumoniae).

Our research effort focuses on a critical step in gene translation: the aminoacylation of transfer RNAs (tRNAs) by aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs). This reaction ensures that the information encoded in each gene is faithfully traduced to protein.

Our laboratory is devoted to the characterization and manipulation of this molecular process, and its application to biomedical purposes. To achieve this objective, the laboratory simultaneously applies techniques from chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology.
